Wales's history

The history stretches as far back as Neolithic times with a number of prehistoric monuments in Anglesey and at other sites in the country.

Forts &Castles

You will find a rich network of Celtic, Roman and Medieval castles, fortifications and historical sites - in fact, there are more than six hundred heritage sites in Wales. Their number and variety reflecting the nation's turbulent and fascinating history.

Wales also has mansions and lavish country homes such as Erddig Hall near Wrexham and Tredegar House near Newport.

From the mid-18th century Wales became an industrial country and you you can experience this part of the country's history from the slate industry in the north to the coal mines in the valleys.

Festivals in Wales

There are large national events, local musical and literary festivals, carnivals

(like inSwansea), regattas and shows that draw crowds of people to historic towns, villages and harbours.

The largest national events are the National Eisteddfod and the Royal Welsh Show, both attract large numbers of visitors. Agricultural shows in every county and farming area in Wales. Local events and city festivals that extend over the summer months.

Historic events such as the Llandudno Victorian Extravaganza, food events like the Abergavenny Food Festival and folk festivals such as the biennial Cemaes Celtic Festival.

Museums and galleries in Wales

The National Museums Wales has a collection of widely dispersed institutions including the National Slate Museum, the National Wool Museum and the gem of all museums, the National Museum Cardiff, which holds some of the nation's grandest treasures and fine art of the highest quality.

Other museums are National Waterfront Museum in Swansea, the Museum of Speed, Blaenavon World Heritage Museum and local town museums.

Wales's long tradition of artistic expression has led to a number of exceptional galleries in the country. The National Portrait Gallery holds over 100 pictures from the 19th century and the National Museum Cardiff displays a significant collection of impressionist works. There are also a number of contemporary art galleries and artists studios around the country.
